Climbing & Bouldering at XC

Please Note

All climbing participants must have a valid climbing waiver filled in prior to attending their session. For participants under the age of 18, this must be completed by a parent or court-appointed legal guardian only. You will be presented with the correct waiver to fill in upon booking, or you can find our waiver page here.

What do I need to know for my first visit as an experienced climber?

Every participant wishing to use our climbing and bouldering walls unsupervised needs a valid waiver form. This can be filled in online prior to your session by clicking here.

You will also be asked to pass a “competency check”, which can be attempted once per visit. This entails checking that you’re able to properly fit your own harness, tie in, and belay safely. We will also check your knowledge of auto-belays and bouldering, and ask you some basic safety questions. If you do not pass you will not be able to use our walls and will need to re-attempt the check no earlier than the following day.

Only climbers aged 18+ may climb unsupervised providing they have passed a “competency check”, attended a bouldering induction or brief, and have all relevant waivers completed.

Climbers aged 14 to 17 can climb unsupervised providing they have passed a “junior competency check” that must be booked and paid for in advance. This can be done by calling 01442 952333 or e-mail us at

What if I’m a first time climber?
You’ll likely be on a guided session or being supervised by a competent climber, so just make sure your supervised climbing waiver has been filled in and you’re ready to go. Be sure to listen to qualified climbers to ensure a fun and safe visit.
What kind of climbing can I do at XC?

We have 20 lead lines, with a great variety of routes. Most routes range from 3 – 8c in difficulty. We have a natural feature wall which can be climbed without using any holds at all, climbers can utilise the natural holds and features of the wall to make it to the top. (Note to climbers: You’ll need to bring an appropriately rated 30m rope (minimum) to lead the walls at XC.)

Our 8 Auto Belays allow you to climb alone should you wish, 3 of which are on the 14m wall.

We have 15 top rope ready walls. 9 on our 14m high walls, and 6 on 8m walls. The routes grade from 3 – 7c and are reset regularly to provide an adequate challenge and variety for experienced climbers.

We also have a reinforced wall section that you can use to practice trad placements, but please note you will need to be backed up by a top rope when practicing this. Please ask the team for more info if you’re interested in trying trad climbing at XC.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

We do offer shoes, harnesses, belay devices, and chalk bags for rental if you don’t have your own but these are subject to availability. If you have your own equipment that is in good condition you can use it. (Note to climbers: You’ll need to bring an appropriately rated 30m rope (minimum) to lead the walls at XC.)

What should I wear?

Dress appropriately according to the temperature outside. Although we are an enclosed building, it can be hot in summer and cold in winter. Wear layers that can be easily removed if you become hot. Dresses and skirts are not permitted. Remove all jewellery and if you have long hair, this must be tied back into a low ponytail.

Do you provide lockers?

Lockers are provided at a cost of £0.20 and are large enough for a rucksack. Alternatively, you can leave your belongings in our briefing room. (Personal items are left unattended at your own risk)

Do you have toilets and changing rooms?

Changing rooms, toilets and showers are available for use on-site at no extra cost to your visit.

If your circumstances change then we rely on you to update us. We will not be liable for any consequential loss or damage you may be caused by any failure on your part to provide us with accurate and up to date information that might affect either your eligibility for membership or your use of the facilities.

3. Payment Terms – EFT
Membership Fees may be paid using the following methods:

  • EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer);
  • Credit/Debit Card;
  • BACS (invoices/missed payments only)

EFT recurring billing is done from an authorised debit or credit card. This is not a Direct Debit and does not carry the same guarantees. This must be set up in person at reception by the cardholder.

EFT billing is performed on the 1st of every month. If the billing date falls on a weekend or holiday the payments may be executed on the next business day.

If your payment is declined, new payment details need to be given within 5 working days or the membership may be terminated. Any declined payments will be outstanding and may be added to the member’s account for processing at the next billing date.

As your Membership Fees are paid by EFT and if you wish to change your card or the account used to pay, you must inform our team of the new card details and the date on which you wish the change to take effect. This must be done in person at reception by the cardholder. The number of membership fee payments required shall be determined by the type of membership you hold. Subject to the suspension provisions below, membership fees are payable throughout the period of membership irrespective of your actual use of the facilities. You may be denied access to the facilities whilst any membership fees or other sums due remain outstanding. In the event that membership fees remain unpaid for a period of more than 3 months, we may refer the matter to a third-party debt collection company.

Your membership is dependent on you maintaining payments of your monthly EFT and if any monthly EFT payment is not received on the due date for payment, then your membership will (except in exceptional circumstances and at our sole discretion) be automatically suspended until all due payments have been brought up to date. We reserve the right to cancel your membership if 3 or more monthly payments have not been received and the cancellation will take effect on the date you are notified.

4. Cancelling your membership
As you have opted for an EFT Subscription, we do not tie you to long term contracts and we allow our members to cancel their membership if we receive fair notice. For your membership to be cancelled you must give us at least 1-month notice, this must be done by emailing This cannot be done by phone or in person. Your membership will always expire at the end of the next calendar month. For example, if you serve 1 month on 8th June your membership will run until 31st July. Cancelling payments with your bank will not stop payments leaving your account.

5. Voluntary suspension of membership
Your membership may be suspended in the event of long-term illness, injury or pregnancy. If you wish to suspend your membership you should inform the team no later than 5 days prior to the start of the month in which you wish the suspension to take effect (“month” refers in this case to a membership billing period and not necessarily a calendar month). We may require a medical certificate, doctor’s note or similar proof of illness or another incapacity for the suspension of your membership.

Membership may be suspended at our sole discretion for non-medical reasons for a minimum period of one month up to a maximum period of three months. During such suspension, normal membership fees shall be replaced with a reduced monthly charge of £10.

6. Your times of use
Each type of membership at XC will offer different hours of use. These will be explained to you when you become a member and may be subject to variation for operational reasons.

7. General conditions

If your membership card is used by anyone else with your knowledge or consent then we reserve the right in our sole discretion to charge you the full rate for the activity used, suspend your membership or cancel your membership without notice and no refund given for the period paid.

We constantly strive to improve your experience with our centres and as a result we will from time to time add to or change or withdraw the activities offered. We will try to give you as much warning as is possible but sometimes for operational reasons we are obliged to withdraw all or any part of the facilities for the periods where we need them for tournaments, exhibitions, competitions or other activities or in connection with any repair, alteration, maintenance work or safety issues. This may include partial or full closures of the facilities.

XC has its own centre rules and you are requested to familiarise yourself with these rules that are designed for the safety and wellbeing of all users. Failure to comply with the centre rules may result in suspension or cancellation of your membership entirely at our discretion and no refund given.

If the complaint or grievance cannot be resolved to your reasonable satisfaction at a local level then we request that you email full details of the complaint or grievance to and the matter will be referred to a Senior Manager.
